Outdoor Learning

We believe that by the time children leave Chesterton they should be able to apply their knowledge and skills of the entire curriculum in a breadth of environments in a practical hands on way.

We believe that teaching across the curriculum should provide rich opportunities for children to develop their love of learning and explore the world in meaningful contexts, to ensure they can make real life links to their world beyond primary school and for future employment. It is imperative that our curriculum develops the whole child and nurtures the development of their individual personal, social and emotional well-being.  Learning outside the classroom enables children to acquire knowledge and skills through memorable experiences which are carefully planned to enhance their national curriculum coverage and spark and interest in the world around them. Learning outside the classroom strengthens their understanding of the role they play as a global citizen.

How we teach Learning outside the Classroom

Every child at Chesterton will have the opportunity to attend high quality, well planned educational visits designed to enrich the curriculum. Across subjects every half term children will take part in a lessons outside of the ‘traditional’ scope. These are bespoke to each class and subject area, and the skills and knowledge of the lesson are in line with the spiral progression and sequence of the subject being taught. Teaching approaches can include utilizing our edible garden and all outdoor learning areas, forest school, sensory activities, workshops and visitors and exploring the local area. This approach to experiential learning allows the children to make connections to the Sustainable Development Goals and the UNCRC, further developing them as a whole child.
